Healing Foods Cooking for Celiacs Colitis Crohns and IBS

After previewing Sandras cookbook, my only wish is that Elaine Gottschall was still alive to see this beautiful creation. Her ability or organize the essential ingredients, appetizers, snacks, main dishes, weekly and monthly cooking plans, will give people the confidence they need to heal themselves. Sick children always do better when the entire home is eating healthy. Sandra s book will allow families to eat the most gourmet meals, without spending an enormous amount of time in the kitchen. Thank you for this wonderful book and all your hard work. It was worth the effort! –Pam Ferro, President, Gottchall Autism Centre, Massachusetts

This book is an invaluable addition to the Specific Carbohydrate Diet library. There are many nutritious, delicious and imaginative recipes that will tempt even the most fussy eater. For example, the author goes to some lengths to include some very good recipes for children. The photographs are excellent, and accompany the text well. In particular, the weekly and monthly cooking plans will help those on the Specific Carbohydrate Diet to effectively manage their meals and their cooking. I am very impressed with this book, and I am happy to support its publication. –Matthew Jackson, Moderator of SCDOZ, Australian/NZ SCD Support Group

Sandra Ramacher, from Australia has authored an exceptional SCD cookbook filled with one hundred beautiful photographs of her recipes. (nearly two hundred and all very appealing). Perhaps you are already aware of it. Sandra, who follows SCD, has shared her book with me and invited me to check recipes for compliance and strict adherence to Elaine’s legacy. She was careful to invite other dedicated SCD key people to review it so she could publish with confidence and assurance that the recipes are clear and ingredients legal. It’s a large collection, prefaced with vital information related to cooking and SCD and will have great appeal even outside the SCD community in my opinion. The recipes are in keeping with today’s trends in food, elegant yet simple to prepare. Each photo is worth a thousand bites! –Carol Frilegh, Celiac. (on SCDiet for 7 yrs)

5 Stars yummy
I bought this book the day I started the SCD that my acupuncturist put me on. It has my favorite recipes of the three books I bought that day.

5 Stars Best SCD book out there!
I found this book to be very diverse and well put together. The author obviously took great time in creating and preparing this book. Goes in accordance to the strict SCDiet. I like the fact that not all recipes are of Indian origin, which I found another comparable book to be. Having to feed a child on this particular diet has opened many doors for creativity on my end as well. This is definitely my go to book.

5 Stars Absolutely delicious!
My daughter just started the specific carbohydrate diet and we had been brainstorming on different, yet appetizing foods to work with, especially in the dessert department. When I purchased this book and experimented with the recipes we were both extremely happy with the end results. The recipes make it easy to create mouth watering, delicious and creative meals! I had used several of the recipes for Thanksgiving and family members were intrigued and I will say, very surprised, that the taste of the food was “normal”; which I think is a major misconception with this diet. Instead of focusing on the “cannot haves” we focus on the “can haves”! Thank you so much for making the transition into SCD land easier! :)

5 Stars Healing foods
Really enjoyed looking through this book can’t wait to start using it but it makes it hard when there are so many to choose from.

5 Stars Excellent and necessary addition to the SCD library!
The photos in this book are exceptional. The recipes are delicious. This cookbook is a must for anyone who wishes to augment their SCD cooking library. The Specific Carbohydrate Diet has completely healed me of Crohn’s Disease. I have been free of disease for over 5 years and am taking no prescription medications, all thanks to this diet. This diet is the only way to control my chronic diarrhea.

Yoga for Healthy Knees What You Need to Know for Pain Prevention and Rehabilitation Rodmell Press Yoga Shorts

By time she was in her early twenties, Sandy Blaine was facing multiple traumatic knee injuries that left her in constant pain. After enduring extensive physical therapy with limited results, Blaine was amazed when a six-month exploration of Iyengar yoga caused her knee pain to disappear completely. Spurred by curiosity and gratitude to find out how this was possible, Blaine made a thorough investigation into recovering from knee pain through the practice of yoga. Her discoveries are revealed in Yoga for Healthy Knees. The book features 17 unique yoga poses tuned specifically to knee health and a complete index and covers knee problems such as hyperextension and tightness, features an extensive section on the best yoga poses for knee pain prevention and rehabilitation, and outlines a daily knee maintenance plan. Blaine explains how to incorporate use of simple props like blankets and towels, and shares safety guidelines that encourage readers to establish good habits, making healthy knees a part of everyday life.

5 Stars Highly recommended for healing aging knees!
Yoga for Healthy Knees is at the top of the list of books I recommend for teaching yoga to people over 50. I always show this book to my students of any age with knee problems. The author is an expert who overcame her own knee pain using yoga. This is a clear, well organized book with a positive, uplifting attitude!

– Suza Francina, author, The New Yoga for People Over 50, The New Yoga for Healthy Aging and other books for people at midlife and older.

5 Stars Yoga for knees
I have arthritis in my knees and hips. I use this book on almosta daily basis. It is easy to read and follow.

5 Stars Wow why can’t drs recommend this book???
I’ve had knee pain off and on some 20 years. I happened to see this while looking for yoga goodies for my home practice (I just started yoga, whatta difference for the better in a short time!, never stopping now!!!) Thought this book might help with that strange grinding and transient pain I get… OMG! This book makes complete sense as to why most of us have knee pain!!! The poses work on strengthening and stretching everything around the knee (actually the entire rest of the leg!) so the knee gets some relief to do only what it is supposed to do. Knee pain? Stretch those quads and hamstrings and groin muscles! I just went through the majority of the poses right from the beginning, and let me tell you, within the first 3-4 exercises you will realize why your knee hurts by showing you how tight the main working leg muscles are. Why couldn’t my original knee doctor figure this out??? Why did he have me struggle with exercises that FOCUSED on the knee, which of course I had to stop since it hurt and never seemed to help?! I am going to incorporate these poses into my home practice ASAP–I can feel the nice stretch I just got in the thighs and hips without feeling like I blew out my knee.

The book has 3 main sections: 1. Factors in common knee problems 2. Practicing yoga for knee care 3. Everyday knees. The first and last sections are pretty short, but to the point. The second section is all the poses you should focus on to help the knees. Poses are meticulously described, good photos (not creepy) of what the pose looks like and even has model using props for support (like many of us will need when we start!) There is also a part for putting the sequences together for active rehabilitation, healthy knee maintenance, and my favorite… I don’t have time to practice! sequence.

A very well-thought out book that makes it obvious how to begin helping your knees–thank you Sandy!!! An excellent book!

4 Stars OOPS, that sould have been 5 STARS!!!
The yoga postures and exercises in this book are definitely helpful for coming back and strengthening after/during knee problems, relieving pain, and regaining mobility. I have noticed positive results from doing the exercises for a short time. I initially gave it a 4 star rating because I would have liked to have more options/exercises included, but what’s included is so valuable that I realize my error — it’s definitely a 5 star! (It won’t let me change my rating at this point.) It was a great purchase and I highly recommend it for anyone who is trying to be rehabilitated from knee injuries or who has osteoarthritis of the knee (I have both, and both have been helped). These exercises have helped me much more in a short period of time than those given me to do by the physical therapist did over an extended period of time (for osteoarthritis, and ACL injury and a meniscus injury). Some of the P.T. exercises actually seemed to exacerbate the problem, so I approached the postures in this book very cautiously. However, there has been NO downside, only positive results. Highly recommended!

5 Stars Kneed help?
Written by a yoga teacher who fixed her own knee pain with the help of yoga, I found this book very easy to use. Here’s a few reasons why I liked it:

-it’s not too long (its smaller than I pictured, 95 pages, but that was fine with me

-the idea here is to help your knees out by strengthening what’s weak and loosening what’s tight

-this is accomplished through yoga poses which you hold for a minute or so

-there are 3 different sequences of poses depending on your needs (nice)

-there’s even a short routine for those busy days we all have

Finding a yoga teacher is suggested, but with all the pictures, descriptions, and sheer straightforwardness of the poses, I don’t feel like it’s a must. In short, this is a good, safe place to start if you have a general knee problem. Also recommend The 5-Minute Plantar Fasciitis Solution for those who suffer from plantar fasciitis.

The Enzyme Factor

September 12, 2009 by Healthy Foods · Leave a Comment

The Enzyme Factor

A bestseller in Shinya’s native Japan, where it was published in 2005, this title introduces his theory of a “source enzyme” to American readers. Shinya came to New York in 1963 as a medical resident and later pioneered the use of a colonoscope to remove polyps from the colon without abdominal incisions. Now a professor of surgery at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and head of the Endoscopic Center of Beth Israel Hospital in New York, he runs private clinics in New York and Japan. Here, he identifies a precursor enzyme that the body converts to specific types of enzymes as they are needed to support, maintain or repair the body and its functions. Shinya broadly discusses how enzymes work and are exhausted by poor lifestyle habits, medications, environmental pollution, electromagnetic waves and daily stress, and provides simple directives for holistically accessing the power of enzymes, including supplements. Myriad observations from his years of practice include that humans should not eat meat from animals with a higher body temperature than their own; the strength of Americans’ digestive systems contributes to illness and obesity; drinking pasteurized milk from cows is lethal to the body; and anticancer drugs do not cure cancer. The real message of Shinya’s book is that lifestyle is essential to health. To help readers develop one in tune with nature, he describes his own ascetic daily routine. While some readers may find Shinya’s ideas unusual, others may welcome his unorthodox approach.

2 Stars Do your homework
I didn’t like the book.If you are willing to get a lot of medical tests including a complete head-to-toe ultrasound and if needed take biochemical hormones, antidepressants, anxiety and pain medications, do not worry about the side effects of medications, getting re-tested by your doctor then you’re following the author’s recommendations. I do hope you have a good insurance plan or the means to pay. I’ll be fair. He does write about taking supplements, eating a healthy diet, having good sleep habits, and reducing stress but most of us know that without reading the book. Do your own homework.

5 Stars younger you
I had checked this book out from the library and wanted to have it as a reference. The book was is good condition and I am happy to have it delilvered so fast. THank you very much.

4 Stars Enjoyed Younger You!
I enjoyed the book, but wish it gave exact presciption amts for quitting smoking. I shared it with my sister and she is enjoying it too. Great book to pinpoint which area of health you need to focus on NOW. I will reread it again soon to keep making progress. Great book to get you started.

4 Stars A MUST-READ FOR BABY-BOOMERS
Baby Boomers are quickly losing memory and health. This book directs you on how to identify areas of “aging” and what to do to take control of your health in that area.

Many of us are concerned about our health, and all the horrible alternatives we have under the influence of the mega-laboratories. This book gives us hope.

5 Stars Great Insight
This book offers great insight into how your brain really is in control of the rest of your body. If your brain is sick or lacking then the rest of your body will be sick too. I look forward to the Younger You Diet book coming out this Christmas.

Smart Medicine for a Healthier Child

Written by a medical doctor, a naturopath, and a registered nurse, Smart Medicine for a Healthier Child is a complete A-to-Z guide to the most common childhood disorders and their treatments, using BOTH alternative care and conventional medicine. Highly Recommended!

User Ratings and Reviews

4 Stars Very useful
Useful, no nonesense advice. It gives you advice on homeopathic remedies, stuff around the house remedies, and drugs too. This is my new go-to book for my child and myself too…

4 Stars Old Version Better
The book has excellent content, however the new version, 2003, is printed in an awful font, hard to read, boring to look at and so on. The original version was written in an easy to read font and contents were in different colors. It was easy to find what you were looking for when your up in the middle of the nite with a sick baby. In their attempt to cut costs, the publisher has really diminished the value of this product.

5 Stars Well-Rounded for ALL Parents
This book has finally combined all views of medicine from the conventional to the all-natural. I enjoyed sharing this book with my pediatrician, who had great things to say about my approach. I love this book and reach for it every time I suspect a cold or illness. We use it for the entire family! Great all around book. I would give this book to ANYONE, not just those seeking natural treatments.

5 Stars simply the best book I have ever seen on this topic
This is the book I get for all of my friends when they are expecting. It has been incredibly helpful for me with my 3 kids and also with the children I watch (I do home daycare). I highly recommend it to everyone. The adult version is excellent too.

5 Stars The only book you will need for your family
I used this book and a homeopathy book in raising my two children. It is all you will need. It gives you the right information to make decisions on whether you should rush them to the hospital, or give them a homeopathic remedy or other natural treatment. The book aids you in making logical and informed decisions for you children. For those of you who still might think homeopathy is “snake oil”, think again. I cured teething problems, colics, ear aches, tummy aches, coughs, bumps and bruises, minor burns, bee stings, and if you pick the right remedy, the kids get better in seconds. If you don’t vaccinate your kids, this is an even more important resource because of detailed information on conditions that even the (allopathic, that is) doctor may not know about. Thank you Janet Zand and other authors for giving parents the knowledge and tools to treat our children naturally and keep them healthy.

FIX IT and FORGET IT LIGHTLY Healthy Low Fat Recipes for Your Slow Cooker

FIX IT and FORGET IT LIGHTLY Healthy Low Fat Recipes for Your Slow Cooker

Yes, Now you can have it all: Food from your slow cooker that is scrumptious, quick and easy to prepare and low fat!

User Ratings and Reviews

4 Stars Not Usually a Fan of Slow Cookers BUT………..
My slow cooker was seldom used because most recipes were not that great. I also don’t like to use canned soup and such for cooking; I am a ‘from scratch chef’ (I use the ‘chef’ loosely). There is very little of that in this book. I don’t like calorie-laden cooking and also prefer to have an approximate idea of what is in a recipe. This book lists calories, fat, sodium and carbs, which concerns me most. In addition protein and vitamins are in the mix.

Some of the recipes are repeated with various regional changes throughout the book. The name and state of the contributor is listed and if you like someone’s versions this is convenient for picking out their recipes. Some people don’t like the repetition but I like different ideas. After trying about a dozen of the recipes, I had 2 that were not so great but most were very good and the Orange Chicken and Tastes Like Chile Rellenos were excellent. I always am of the opinion that if you get one very good recipe from a book it is worth the cost (I purchased the hardcover edition). After following the original recipe as written, changes can be made such as leaving the chicken skin on or off, adjusting the seasonings to your liking and so on.

4 Stars Easy and healthy meals
FIX-IT and FORGET-IT lightly is a great cookbook if your looking for easy low calorie healthy meals. My husband and I are always looking for recipes that are tasty as well as healthy. We follow Weight Watchers alot and with these recipes it’s easy to stay on the program. And since the recipes call for a slow cooker, it couldn’t be easier to prepare. I would highly recommend this cookbook.

5 Stars Great lower calorie recipes!
I have already cooked several recipes from this book and have loved both the ease in making them and the lower calories!

4 Stars Recipes OK, but get the ringed binder
So far have only made a couple of the recipes, which were fine. I saw the book in a store shortly after getting it from Amazon, and the one there had a ringed binder - which would be much better because it would lay flat on the counter. I didn’t think about that when ordering.

5 Stars Must have for your cookbook library
This is a really great cookbook for working people who are trying to be careful with their diet. Lots of easy, good tasting recipes and detailed nutrition information. I love this book! Everyone who has a crockpot should have this book. Really, there is everything and something for everyone in this terrific cookbook.
